KIRTAN at ABHAYA YOGA
Every 3rd Friday of the Month
September 19th @ 8:30PM
Bhakti Dojo is a Brooklyn-based kirtan group hosted by Srikala (of Srikalogy) and Jesse Johnson. We lead an open kirtan practice every Sunday afternoon at our home in Brooklyn, where we chant the holy names and share stories and poems from the ancient mystics. “Bhakti” is the sanskrit word for devotion, surrender and divine love. “Dojo” is a place for practice and discipline. Bhakti Dojo’s mission is to spread the joys and blessings of the holy name by cultivating a community that supports the transformation that accompanies regular practice. We are storytellers and musicians, dancers and poets, teachers and servants, and we offer all this service in love.
October 17th @ 8:30 PM
Ambika Cooper has been a singer for many years. In a former incarnation she sang in various bands in NYC until she discovered chanting with Krishna Das in 1995. Kirtan had a profound effect on her, and lead her to India where she continued to deepen her connection to the chants. This practice has become her refuge over the years. She has recently begun to explore and sing chants from other faith traditions, and is currently finishing a recording of the Metta Chant (Lovingkindness) with producer, Devadas Labrecque, for digital release in the fall of 2014. She will be recording a full kirtan CD in the coming year as well.
December 12th @ 8:30PM
(6:30PM Nina will be accompanying Tara Glazier for Bhava Friday)
Nina Rao learned traditional chants from her grandfather in a village in south India when she was nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. She is Krishna Das’ assistant and tours with him, playing cymbals and singing. In 2007, she recorded a track “Nina Chalisa” on Krishna Das’ CD, Flow of Grace. In Jan 2013, Nina released her own debut double-CD, Antarayaami – Knower of All Hearts, which includes kirtan, bhajan, a variety of Hanuman Chalisa chants and a brand new duet with Krishna Das. Nina is based in Brooklyn, NY with her daughter, and chants with her friends and satsang in the New York area and beyond.
