Ambika Cooper has been a singer for many years. In a former incarnation she sang in various bands in NYC until she discovered chanting with Krishna Das in 1995. Kirtan had a profound effect on her, and lead her to India where she continued to deepen her connection to the chants. This practice has become her refuge over the years. She has recently begun to explore and sing chants from other faith traditions, and is currently finishing a recording of the Metta Chant (Lovingkindness) with producer, Devadas Labrecque, for digital release in the fall of 2014. She will be recording a full kirtan CD in the coming year as well.
November 21st @ 8:15 PM
In 2013, Devadas released Brooklyn Mellows, which features a collection of musicians and singers from the vibrant New York City kirtan scene and beyond. He has also recorded and performed with Krishna Das, Wah, Nina Rao, Gaura Vani and others. As a composer, he’s collaborated with indie rocker J Mascis to score the soundtrack to the feature documentary One Track Heart / The Story of Krishna Das and as a producer, worked with Nina Rao on her 2013 release Antarayaami – Knower of All Hearts. Devadas regularly produces sacred music events to benefit his Guru, Amma ( Mata Amritanandamayi) Embracing the World humanitarian charities. Devadas is known for creating music that is both beautiful and transformational.
December 12th @ 8:15 PM
(6:30PM Nina will be accompanying Tara Glazier for Bhava Friday)
Nina Rao learned traditional chants from her grandfather in a village in south India when she was nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. She is Krishna Das’ assistant and tours with him, playing cymbals and singing. In 2007, she recorded a track “Nina Chalisa” on Krishna Das’ CD, Flow of Grace. In Jan 2013, Nina released her own debut double-CD, Antarayaami – Knower of All Hearts, which includes kirtan, bhajan, a variety of Hanuman Chalisa chants and a brand new duet with Krishna Das. Nina is based in Brooklyn, NY with her daughter, and chants with her friends and satsang in the New York area and beyond.
