In this workshop students will be introduced to the basic Mat sequence as it was taught by Joseph Pilates. Created nearly a century ago, this series of Mat exercises is often referred to as the “core” of the Pilates method and is still practiced by loyal students, dancers, and athletes today. Students will be given the opportunity to explore the Six Principles of the Pilates - Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath and Flow, and their impact on the execution of the Mat exercises. Practiced regularly, the basic Mat work creates a strong, stable and balanced body. It is the perfect compliment to a regular asana practice or just about any other fitness routine.
This workshop is perfect for those students who are new to Pilates, as well as those looking to dive deeper into the basics. Each student will receive special attention to ensure proper form and execution of the exercises. This workshop is also appropriate for individuals who are recovering, or working with, mild injuries.
Kara began studying Yoga and Pilates nearly 20 years ago as a modern dancer in college. She brings to her teaching the influence of a lifetime of movement study including ballet and modern dance, Pilates, vinyasa and alignment based yoga. With an eye for detail, students are offered clear instruction for a refined practice. Kara specializes in working with students to overcome the mechanical, habitual and injury related challenges that can often limit movement.In 2009, with more than 600 apprentice hours completed, Kara became a classically trained Pilates instructor through Power Pilates in NYC, and its affiliate studio, Beacon Pilates in upstate New York. She has been a senior teacher at both The Pilates Boutique and The Center Studio in Manhattan and is proud to now be working with students through her own studio, the Brooklyn Pilates Project, located in Abhaya Yoga Gowanus. Kara completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training with Tara Glazier at Abhaya Yoga in Dumbo, Brooklyn and continues to teach a weekly Abhaya Core class to both the Gowanus and Dumbo community.Saturday, June 2nd - Gowanus
